What you can't put in a dumpster: prohibited materials explained
Roll-off dumpsters are convenient, but not every item can go in one. Prohibited materials usually fall into hazardous, flammable, or specially regulated categories.
Hazardous liquids and chemicals
Paint (especially liquid), solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, motor oil, and automotive fluids are almost always prohibited. These need to go to a household hazardous waste (HHW) collection event or permanent HHW facility in your city.
Batteries and electronics
Car batteries, lithium-ion batteries, and electronics (TVs, monitors, computers) are usually restricted because of recycling laws. Most cities run e-waste events or partner with retailers like Best Buy for free e-recycling.
Appliances with refrigerants
Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers contain refrigerants that must be removed by a certified technician before disposal. Some haulers accept them with a surcharge once the refrigerant is drained and certified.
Tires, propane tanks, and fuel cans
These items are usually restricted due to transportation safety or recycling rules. Tires often require a separate haul; propane tanks need to be returned to a fuel retailer.
Asbestos and medical waste
Asbestos-containing material and medical/biohazard waste require specialized disposal companies and can never go in a standard roll-off.
